Radiocarbon dating is the process of determining the age of an object made of organic material by utilising the properties of radiocarbon, a radioactive isotope of carbon (also known as carbon dating or carbon-14 dating). The method was developed in the late 1940s at the University of Chicago by Willard Libby. Carbon dating is based on the discovery that radiocarbon (14C) is continuously produced in the Earth's atmosphere by a reaction between cosmic rays and atmospheric nitrogen.


The Process of Carbon Dating


Radiocarbon was initially measured using beta-counting devices, which estimated the amount of beta radiation generated by 14C atoms decaying in a sample. The preferred method for carbon dating has recently emerged as accelerator mass spectrometry, which counts all 14C atoms in a sample rather than just the handful that happens to decay during observations. Even as little as individual plant seeds, carbon dating can be utilised to obtain results, and it does so much more swiftly.
