CROPIC Initiative by Ministry of Agriculture

CROPIC Initiative by Ministry of Agriculture

The Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare is launching CROPIC (Collection of Real Time Observations & Photo of Crops), a pilot study that uses field photographs and AI-based models to monitor crop health and assess losses. Farmers will capture images through a dedicated mobile app during Kharif 2025 and Rabi 2025-26, which will be analysed using AI-powered tools to identify crop type, stage, and damage.

The initiative aims to support the Pradhan Mantri Fasal Bima Yojana (PMFBY) by automating crop loss assessment and claim settlements, enhancing transparency and efficiency in compensations. Initially, the pilot will be run in 50 districts per season, covering three notified crops per district. The project will eventually scale nationwide by 2026.

The initiative is funded through the Fund for Innovation and Technology (FIAT) under PMFBY, with a total outlay of ₹825 crore earmarked for technological innovations.

India's Next Giant Leap: A Glimpse into ISRO's Ambitious Human Spaceflight Future

India's Next Giant Leap: A Glimpse into ISRO's Ambitious Human Spaceflight Future

#RPMishra

Imagine a groundbreaking moment in India's space journey: an Indian astronaut, Shubhanshu Shukla, preparing for a historic flight to the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission. This potential mission represents a monumental step for India's space program, signaling a shift from symbolic achievements to tangible progress in human spaceflight.

Unlike Rakesh Sharma's inspirational spaceflight in 1984, which was a significant first, Shukla's (hypothetical) mission would be deeply integrated with ISRO's larger strategic goals. His experiences would directly inform critical future endeavors, including the highly anticipated Gaganyaan mission – India's inaugural human spaceflight from its own soil – and the long-term vision for a dedicated Indian space station.

As the potential first Indian to journey to the ISS and serve as the mission's pilot, Shubhanshu Shukla would gain invaluable hands-on experience in complex space operations. The insights and training from such a mission would be crucial for enhancing the safety and success of Gaganyaan and paving the way for future manned missions.

Beyond human spaceflight training, ISRO envisions using this mission to conduct vital science experiments in zero gravity. These could include studies on critical areas like muscle loss in space (essential for astronaut health), experiments on growing sustainable food sources like moong dal sprouts, and research into novel technologies such as micro-algae for life support. Such research would significantly advance India's capabilities in space health and food security.

This kind of mission is projected to have far-reaching impacts:

Boosting India’s Space Economy: By actively participating in commercial space ventures and fostering innovation, India aims to significantly increase its share of the global $500 billion space market, targeting a rise from its current 2% to 10%.

Inspiring a New Generation: It would ignite the imaginations of young Indians, encouraging them to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) fields, particularly in space science.

Attracting Private Investment: Such high-profile missions demonstrate India's growing capabilities, making the space sector more attractive for domestic and international private investment.

Paving the Way for Future Milestones: The knowledge and experience gained would be instrumental in preparing India for ambitious future goals, including its projected Moon mission by 2040.

In essence, a mission of this magnitude would underscore India's expanding confidence and ambition in the space arena, seamlessly blending inspiration with concrete advancements that contribute to both national progress and humanity's shared exploration of the cosmos.

The Crisis of Identity and the Path to Self-Renewal

The Crisis of Identity and the Path to Self-Renewal

In contemporary times, a worrying trend has emerged where people are increasingly distancing themselves from their own cultural and indigenous identities. This tendency, which often replaces creativity and originality with self-forgetfulness, emphasizes an uncritical adoption of external and often incongruous ideas. Even in independent India, the contributions of Indian thinkers have often been overlooked. Visionaries like Mahatma Gandhi, Rabindranath Tagore, and Sri Aurobindo have seen their philosophies largely disregarded, as the nation seemingly embraced a Western framework of progress, defined by scientific rationality and modernity.

Instead of crafting an authentic post-colonial identity, India continued to tread the path laid down by British rulers, with only superficial changes. Blind adoption of foreign standards and practices became the norm, and modernity was equated with mimicking the West in thought, attire, and behavior. This subjugation of the self—whether born out of ignorance or a deliberate detachment from history and tradition—remains a burning question to this day.

Over the past seven decades, the Indian republic has achieved significant milestones and withstood numerous trials. Viewed in a global context, it is commendable that democratic institutions have remained intact, barring the Emergency of 1975-77, and elections have been conducted consistently. Political consciousness has expanded, allowing greater representation of diverse sections of society. However, this progress has been marred by the prioritization of power at any cost. The pursuit of narrow political interests has overshadowed the larger goals of nation-building, with ideological commitment giving way to opportunism and a decline in ethical political conduct.

While poverty alleviation, industrial growth, infrastructure development, and agricultural reforms have made notable strides, systemic challenges persist. Privatization in sectors like education, healthcare, employment, and the judiciary has deepened inequalities. Additionally, the growing population has placed immense pressure on resources and infrastructure, making it increasingly difficult to meet the nation's needs.

India stands as the inheritor of a vibrant and ancient civilization. While the nation is advancing on the path of progress, sustaining this momentum requires the cultivation of a culture that values labor, innovation, and adaptability. Strengthening democratic values is essential for ensuring the republic’s robust health and resilience.

The heroes of India's independence movement hailed from every corner of the country, representing all religions, castes, and communities. Their shared vision of India was an inclusive and holistic one. Honoring their legacy demands moving beyond the colonial mindset and embracing our collective identity with pride. A truly autonomous and self-aware India will be the finest embodiment of their dreams.

Mahatma Gandhi, with his foresight, had cautioned against mindlessly imitating the West, warning that such a course would strip India of its soul, a loss it could never recover from. At the same time, he emphasized that staying rooted in one’s heritage does not imply being trapped in it. Today, more than ever, we must rediscover those roots and realign with our indigenous ethos to chart a path forward that is both authentic and progressive.

The responsibility to uphold and nurture this vision lies with each one of us. Only then can we fulfill the promise of the republic and build an India that is rooted in its essence and yet soaring toward new horizons.

Understanding Docking in Space Exploration

Understanding Docking in Space Exploration

Docking is a critical process in space exploration, where two spacecraft in orbit are maneuvered to connect with each other, forming a unified system. This technique is essential for missions involving modular space stations, transporting crew and supplies, or assembling large spacecraft that exceed the capacity of a single launch vehicle.

The docking process begins by bringing two spacecraft into the same orbit. They are then carefully guided closer using precise maneuvers, either manually by astronauts or autonomously through advanced systems. Once the spacecraft align, their docking mechanisms physically join, enabling the sharing of power, data, and resources.

The concept of docking gained prominence during the space race. The first successful docking occurred in 1966 when NASA’s Gemini VIII spacecraft docked with the Agena target vehicle, piloted by astronauts, including Neil Armstrong. Automated docking was later achieved by the Soviet Union in 1967, and China demonstrated its capability in 2011 with the Shenzhou 8 mission.

Docking is crucial for future missions. For example, space stations like the International Space Station (ISS) are assembled in orbit by docking multiple modules. Similarly, missions to the moon and Mars rely on docking to transfer samples, equipment, and crew between spacecraft.

India's space agency, ISRO, is currently developing this technology as part of its ambitious plans to establish a space station by 2035 and execute lunar missions. By mastering docking, ISRO aims to expand its capabilities in assembling complex spacecraft, supporting human exploration, and advancing international collaborations in space.
